Message from the Director
I hope this message finds you well and enjoying the fall weather. It’s hard to believe daylight saving time is upon us. Recently, our OTAN team has been considering how we currently communicate with the field and how we might better communicate with the field moving forward. It feels like there have been changes in how people choose to engage and it may not be through some of our usual means like newsletters or emails. While podcasts aren’t new, they are a growing way to connect with school communities and to share important information.
Some podcasts that I’ve been listening to within our broader adult education community:
- Ear Hustle – Produced inside San Quentin State Prison, this podcast offers authentic, first-hand stories about life inside prison
- Journeys – From Jurupa Adult School, this podcast highlights adult learners’ experiences, successes, and challenges, offering inspiration for students
- CAEAA All Things Adult Ed – Hosted by the California Association for Adult Education, this podcast shares insights, strategies, and resources for adult education professionals
Do podcasts resonate with you and your community? They seem to be a great way to highlight success stories, market your programs, and to share expertise and best practices. On the cautionary side, producing quality episodes can take time, planning, and money to purchase equipment to get started. What are some creative ways that you’re connecting with your communities? We would love to hear from you. And, if you’re an adult school with an active podcast, we’d love to know that, too.
On a separate topic, OTAN’s Technology and Digital Learning Symposium is right around the corner, March 6-7. Registration and the Call for Proposals opened this week. Perhaps, you can submit a proposal to present on starting a podcast for your school site.
Hopefully, you’ve been inspired to jump on this podcast journey with me. Happy listening!
