FDA: Health Labels and Over-the-Counter Medications

Activity Description

In this activity we review reading medication labels and Tips for Safe Use of Over-the-Counter Medications

Preparation

  1. Go to the Web Site Example.
  2. Use this link to see the video titled "Over the Counter Drug Facts Label" new window.
  3. Gather medicine labels for over the counter drugs. (enough for each student) These will be used in the activity. If you do not have any medicine labels, use this one for Ibuprofen new window and/or the second Example Document above. Print these for students to look at.
  4. Make copies of the Drug Fact Labels worksheet for students to use during the activity.

How-To

  1. Go to the Web Site Example (above) and watch the video, Over the Counter Drug Facts Label
  2. Lead the class in discussion.
  3. Hand out OTC packages or documents with Drug Fact Labels. Students fill out the fact information sheet (see Example Document 1 - above) for one package then trade with neighbor.
  4. Students present to the class what their medicine can be used for and warnings concerning the drug.
