Activity Description

job interview

Students will dicuss job-seeking skills, describe a job interview and paticipate in a mock interivew.

For student dicussions, to include technology, have students create a google slide and present to the class.

Lesson Plan

Warm-up

Write the words "JOB INTERVIEW" on the board or use powerpoint slide. Have students brainstorm its definition and inform they feel is needed to have a successful interview experince. 

Distribute graphic organizer, KWL – Job Interview Skills. Instruct students to fill out the first two columns of the chart. Ask students to write down what they already know about interviewing and what they want to know about the interview process. The last column will be completed during lesson closure.

Presentation

Introduce PowerPoint "The Job Interview"  or download video resource. Students will be expected to take notes while viewing the slide presentation. Focus and discuss the contents of each slide. Allow for student discussion.

Practice

Use resource provided, begin activity 1 " Interview Advice."

Place students in small groups,  give students discussion questions, ask students identify a note taker, ask students to collaborate and provide one suggestion as a group for each category, have each team present their group suggestions for each category, have a whole group discussion 

Practice

Use resource provided, begin activity 2 " Interview Experiences."

Place students in small groups or have a whole class discussion 

Evaluation

Use resource provided, begin activity 3 " Role play."

Provide students with “Partner checklist”, review checklist and discuss each section, place students in pairs,give students interview questions, ask students to select an interviewer and an interviewee, have students switch roles, have a whole class discussion. 

When all interviews are concluded have a group discussion, ask students to reflect on their interview experience. 
Provide students a few minutes to complete the L column of the graphic organizer, KWL Chart. 

Application

Provide students with a copy of the “Mock Interview Rubric," discuss rubric with class review each section, schedule Interview Date for each student, conduct a Mock Interview - use rubric to assess students, after each interview provide student with feedback.

CTE Anchor Standards

  • Anchor Standard 2: Communications - Language Standard: Acquire and accurately use general academic and domain-specific words and phrases sufficient for reading, writing, speaking, and listening at the (career and college) readiness level; demonstrate independence in gathering vocabulary knowledge when considering a word or phrase important to comprehension or expression.
  • Anchor Standard 3: Career Planning and Management - Speaking and Listening Standard: Integrate multiple sources of information presented in diverse formats and media (e.g., visually, quantitatively, orally) in order to make informed decisions and solve problems, evaluating the credibility and accuracy of each source and noting any discrepancies among the data.
  • Anchor Standard 5: Problem Solving and Critical Thinking - Writing Standard: Conduct short as well as more sustained research projects to answer a question (including a self-generated question) or solve a problem, narrow or broaden the inquiry when appropriate, and synthesize multiple sources on the subject, demonstrating understanding of the subject under investigation.
  • Anchor Standard 11: Demonstration and Application - Demonstrate and apply the knowledge and skills contained in the industry-sector anchor standards, pathway standards, and performance indicators in classroom, laboratory, and workplace settings, and the career technical student organization.
