Lesson Plan

Warm-up

Ask students what is a resume and why does it matter?   Ask students to share their thoughts. If you use Padlet, give students the opportunity to read each other’s responses before they share. If you’re teaching in person, you can think, pair, and share. For online learning platforms, can ask students to type in the chat box or use the discussion board. 

Introduction

Discuss the importance of a resume. 

Presentation

View powerpoint video or download "what is a resume" Powerpoint, edit and modify to meet your class needs and present to class.  

Practice

Activity 1: 

Dowload Preparing a Resume activity one document resource.  

In this activity, students will work together in groups of three to explore a scenario. They will practice preparing a resume for a fictional student using three resources: a job description, a personal profile of a potential applicant, and a resume template. 

Place students in groups of three, and give students 5 minutes to familiarize themselves with the activity information.  

Ask students to work together to identify the information that should be included in the resume, what information should be excluded, and how it might be organized in a resume template. 

Activity 2:

Have students exange resumes with a different group.  Have students provide feedback on resumes.  Emphasize the need for correct spelling, punctuation, subject-verb agreement, capitalization, and other writing conventions.    Ask students to review the resume as if they were the employer.  

Activity 3: 

Dicuss feedback as a class.  Project resumes for class and have groups explain the feedback they provided and why. 

Practice

Activity 1: 

Download the resume building worksheet. Have students complete worksheet with their own information. 

Activity 2: 

Have students use google docs to build a resume using the information from their worksheet. 

Activity 3: 

Ask students to exchange resumes with a partner,  Have students provide feedback on resumes.  Emphasize the need for correct spelling, punctuation, subject-verb agreement, capitalization, and other writing conventions.    Ask students to review the resume as if they were the employer.  

Evaluation

Have students apply peer feedback corrections to their resumes.  Create a final draft and submit it to the instructor for final review and teacher feedback.
