216. The Idiom Connection: Student Idiom Project

Activity Description

This Web site lists numerous English language idioms alphabetically and by topic. Students can be assigned to choose a set number of idioms from the site and create a presentation to teach the class the idiom(s) by creating a PowerPoint presentation, writing and performing a dialog, using Web sites to create digital films or comic strips based on dialogs, or making videos.

Activity Description

The Northstar Digital Literacy Assessment is a self-guided, online set of assessments that show an individual’s ability to perform basic computer skills in eight skill area areas:

  • Basic Computer Use
  • Internet
  • Windows OS/Mac OS
  • E-mail
  • Word Processing (using Microsoft Word)
  • Social Media
  • Excel
  • PowerPoint

Use these assessments for post-testing your students on these various skills.

The “Psych Files” provides information about human behavior and is of special interest to anyone studying psychology. In this activity, students listen to a podcast by Michael Britt titled “5 Reasons Why You’re Addicted to Your Phone and What To Do About It” in which he gives reasons drawn from psychological theories on how we learn. Students are then asked to share their thoughts about cell phone usage and what rules they would implement to help control their teenager’s use.

In this activity, students use the Thesis Builder tool to create a thesis statement for a cause-and-effect essay. Students are then shown an outline to help them write each of the five paragraphs based on their thesis statement. What makes this essay different is the narrower focus on looking into the causes (what made/makes something happen) and the effects (the thing that happens).
