Personal Video with Animoto: About Me

Details

Activity Description

Students can introduce themselves to classmates with an "About Me" slideshow created using Animoto, and they may learn some technology skills in the process. Animoto is usually a paid account but you can get a free account (must be renewed yearly) for yourself and 50 students.

Preparation

  1. Print instructions for how to use.
  2. Preview the Example URL to see ideas for how to use Animoto in education and to see how to apply for an educational account.
  3. Gather pictures from the Web (careful of copyright issues), from class, or personal photos to use in creating demonstration video.
  4. Several days in advance of completing this project, assign students to bring in digital photos of themselves and their life. If they don't have digital photos, see if you can find a scanner to scan photos for them to make into digital images.

How-To

  1. See handout of instructions titled "Animoto Directions in the Example Document above.
  2. Use example URL for examples to show class or dreate your own.
  3. Demonstrate how to make a video using pictures from the Web or from ones you supply.
  4. Assign students to create "About Me" videos.

Teacher Tips

  • With Animoto, use the built-in music choices or upload music (must be an .mp3 audio file). Among Animoto's built-in music choices are Top 40, Indie Rock, Electronica, HipHop, Latin, Jazz, Classical, Country, and others submitted by musicians.
  • Animoto is free for making 30 second videos. To make longer videos, see Education options and apply for an account.

More Ways

Forget memorizing vocabulary lists! Stop index flash cards, too. For vocabulary or idioms, instructors can make short, visual slideshows to help students remember definitions or can assign one term or item on a vocabulary list to individual students or small groups to make slideshows that can be posted on a Web page as a video dictionary.
