Activity Description

Medline's Patient Education Institute offers medical information in video and written formats. They are also available in Spanish. The videos require that your Web browser have the Adobe Flash plug-in, version 8 or above, but most current browsers have this feature included. If not, you can download it for free at the Adobe Web site .

Activity Description

Use this online dictionary in class whenever students need to know a definition of a word or learn words with similar meanings to a given vocabulary word. You can also assign students to use the Web site to look up definitions, synonyms, and see sample sentences of given vocabulary words on word lists and hear pronunciations of words.

214. Multi-Cultural Educational Services: Adult Phonics Stories

Activity Description

This excellent Web site presents a contextual phonics model for teaching reading to American-born adults.

In the online versions, audio/visual stories are read to the student emphasizing certain sounds. The student can read along and repeat the story at the end. The student practices typing sounds that are spoken. There is a print version of each story. A general Lesson Plan (PDF) and a supplementary lesson plan (PDF) is available to assist the teacher in teaching the low literacy student. Word and Number Bingo cards are available for reinforcement.

215. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA): A Pictorial History of Rockets

Activity Description

This Web site from NASA has many lesson plans. The lesson highlighted here is the history of the rocket. It will use the Pictorial History of Rockets handout (PDF file) found on the Example Web Site (above) as a starting point for student research.
