Details

Activity Description

Idioms are sometimes difficult for our students. This site presents them in lists and then presents online quizzes. Select a category of idioms and use this site to assist in your presentation.

Preparation

  1. Preview the Web site to see what is available and what may work for your learning objectives.
  2. Select an idiom category.
  3. Print the Example Document - Idioms Worksheet (above), or send it digitally to your students via e-mail..

How-To

  1. Discuss idioms with your students.
  2. Make a list on the board of idioms they suggest.
  3. Open the Example Web Site (above) on the instructors computer and demonstrate how to use the site.
  4. Divide the class into groups with each group taking one idiom category. Have each group of students visit the site on their computers. As a group, students select 10 idioms, decide on their meaning and use them in sentences.
  5. Gather the group together to present their findings.
  6. For follow up have students practice the online quizzes.

Teacher Tips

  • Many sites, like this one, have advertising. Teach your students what ads look like and how to avoid selecting them since sometimes they contain malware that they will not want on their computers, at school or at home. It is a very important and necessary skill for them to know.

More Ways

  • Idioms are great fun. Students enjoy working with them. Put 24 idioms on the board and have students write them randomly on a Bingo board (See Example Document -Blank Bingo Board, above) Play bingo with students identifying the idiom from your description.
