To study literature and the story elements read the short story "Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry. The resource document has  vocabulary from the story to study in preparation for reading the story. Online dictionaries, Yourdictionary.com, or Thefreedictionary.com can assist the students in looking up the vocabulary words.An audio presentation can read the story to the students.

Preparation

  1. Go through the story. Make a list of words you want to preview with the students. (You can use the word list in the Document, above.) Some of the words are defined online with links in the story.
  2. Review the How to Write a Summary handout. (Document above)
  3. Visit this site If you want to present information about William S. Porter "O. Henry" .

How-To

  1. Discuss how to write a summary. Show the diagram in the handout, Write a Summary, for a great visualization.
  2. Go over the vocabulary in "The Gift of the Magi" using the handout provided or your own list. (If students need more practice with learning the new words, you might try the Flashcard Maker .)
  3. Review the story elements: character, setting, plot, conflict and theme. You can review using Khan Academy's The elements of a story
  4. Read the story to the students or have each student read a paragraph or two to the each other.
  5. Discuss the story, pointing out summary points. Be sure to include story elements.
  6. Assign students to write a summary paragraph about the story.

Teacher Tips

  • Point out to the students that sometimes you may not know all the words in a story, but you can still understand what is happening by viewing or listening to the story.
