Math Got Served: Quadratic Equations
Details
Activity Description
In this activity, students are presented with a classroom lesson on solving factorable quadratic equations. In a computer lab or classroom, students then use the site to reinforce what they learned.
Preparation
- Check that your school does not block the site.
- Review the online activity by visiting the Example Web Site, above.
- Teach any needed concepts to prepare your students for this lesson.
- Prepare a homework assignment with additional practice problems, or use some free worksheets you can find on the Internet such as:.
- Kuta Software worksheets (there are a few free worksheets here under Quadratic Functions)
- Math Worksheets 4 Kids (scroll down the page past the advertising to find some)
- The Teacher's Corner - Make your Own Quadratic Equation Worksheets
How-To
- Introduce the lesson on Quadratic Equations and given a quadratic equation, ask students how they could find a solution. Explore different student ideas. Consider graphing the equation. Demonstrate how to solve different examples by factoring.
- Have students view the presentation online and the steps needed to solve a factorable quadratic equation. Demonstrate how to solve different examples by factoring and then have the class try to solve some of the examples.
- Walk around the room to assist students who may need additional instruction.
- Place a link to the lesson on your class Web site or wiki, if you have one. Encourage students to review the lesson at home, if needed. You can also have the students do the Practice section in a computer lab
- Assign your worksheet for homework.
- Review homework on another day and identify gaps in understanding.
Teacher Tips
- Use the Algebra PowerPoint Interactive Activity or the Geometry PowerPoint Interactive Activity which are now iPad compatible (using just the browser, not an app) for a class game or for individual play. You will need to keep track manually of which questions on the Jeopardy game board have been asked and answered.
More Ways
- This site includes areas of Algebra and Geometry with lessons and exercises to help students prepare for the High School Equivalency Test.
Program Areas
- ASE: High School Equivalency Preparation
- ASE: High School Diploma
Lesson Plan
Objective: Activate prior knowledge about quadratic equations.
Activity:
-
- Begin with a brief discussion about quadratic equations.
- Ask students if they recall how to solve any quadratic equations from previous lessons.
- Prompt them to share their methods and ideas.
Objective: Introduce factorable quadratic equations and the lesson’s goal.
Activity:
-
- Present a simple quadratic equation (e.g., x^2−5x+6=0, x^2 - 5x + 6 = 0, x^2−5x+6=0) and ask students how they might find its solutions.
- Discuss various methods including graphing and factoring.
- Explain that today’s focus will be on solving quadratic equations by factoring.
- Objective: Teach students the steps to solve factorable quadratic equations.
- Activity:
-
- Use a projector or interactive whiteboard to show a presentation on solving quadratic equations by factoring.
- Demonstrate step-by-step how to factor quadratic equations using examples.
- Highlight key concepts such as finding factors of the constant term that add up to the coefficient of the middle term.
-
Objective: Reinforce the learned concepts through guided practice.
Activity:
-
- Distribute worksheets with quadratic equations that must be solved by factoring.
- Have students work in pairs to solve the problems. Encourage them to discuss their methods and reasoning with each other.
- Walk around the room to provide assistance and ensure students are on the right track.
Objective: Provide additional practice to reinforce the day's lesson.
Activity:
-
- Assign a worksheet with quadratic equations to solve by factoring. Use resources like Kuta Software, Math Worksheets 4 Kids, or The Teacher's Corner. (See attached worksheet found in Documents.)
- Ensure the worksheet is accessible through the class website or wiki for students needing extra practice at home.
Objective: Assess student understanding of solving factorable quadratic equations.
Activity:
-
- Conduct a quick formative assessment using an online quiz or a class game such as Jeopardy focusing on solving quadratic equations.
- Use tools like Kahoot or Google Forms for the quiz. For Jeopardy, use the Algebra PowerPoint Interactive Activity.
Objective: Apply the learned skills in a computer lab or classroom setting.
Activity:
-
- Guide students to use the Example Website for additional practice solving quadratic equations.
- Provide a specific set of problems for them to solve on the website.
- Encourage students to help each other and discuss their problem-solving strategies.
