Activity Description

Use this Internet activity when teaching vocabulary for transportation. Students learn vocabulary for common transportation words and then use the Internet (with sites listed) to practice the vocabulary and find distances and prices for traveling to various locations. For a final activity, students choose a destination and use the Internet to answer the following questions:

  • Where do you want to go?
  • When do you want to go?
  • How do you want to go?
  • How much does it cost?
  • How long does it take?

Preparation

  1. Make sure that the Web sites listed on the PDF file are not blocked at your school before using them with students.
  2. Modify the handout as necessary for your area. (If you are not in Los Angeles, use the closest airport or bus station as an example.)
  3. Print and make copies for students.

How-To

  1. Pre-teach vocabulary for transportation.
  2. Students can do the first pages with vocabulary and writing in class.
  3. In your classroom or in the computer lab, demonstrate for students how to use the Web sites listed.
  4. Circulate in the computer lab as students complete the activity to assist if they need help.

Teacher Tips

  • Students will need to know how to type in a URL in the Web address area of an Internet browser.
  • Demonstrate how to enter travel / destination search criteria on travel / transportation Web sites.
  • It may be a good idea to do the first 1 - 2 class practice activities as a whole class.
