Activity Description
Memrise is an online learning tool which has 300+ courses created to help teach/practice vocabulary. These 'courses' are created by its community, meaning you can add your own word lists to practice or you can use other's. It is used mainly to teach languages, but there are also courses for other academic and nonacademic subjects including science, math, history, trivia, etc
In this activity you will practice vocabulary words from the book, 504 Absolutely Essential Words.
Preparation
- Sign up for an account at Memrise.
- After logging in, select Courses at the top of the page, then enter 504 vocabulary in the search field. Scroll down the page and select 504 Absolutely Essential Words by la-princesa. (The Example Document - Worksheet for 504 Absolutely Essential Words, above, was created for this course.)
- Familiarize yourself with the site to anticipate any problems.
- Print the Example Document (above) for your students to do the assignment.
How-To
- Discuss ways to learn vocabulary words. (word lists, looking up definitions, creating sentences, using the words in a story, context clues etc.)
- Introduce the Example Web Site, Memrise.
- Follow the directions above in the Prep section to locate the course, 504 Absolutely Essential Words.
- Demonstrate how to use the course by practicing words 1-15 as a class.
- Hand out worksheet, Example Document - Worksheet for 504 Absolutely Essential Words.
- In pairs, assign students to fill out the worksheet for the first 15 words.
- You may want to include an in-class quiz on the first 15 words. Or for a bit of fun, try creating a Kahoot it! activity and let your students use their smart phones to answer the questions.
- Week 2, assign words 1-30 for students to do independently or in pairs. (Mix reading levels so more students get to participate.)
Teacher Tips
- If you have beginning level students, assign them to work in small groups of 2-3 students who are at higher reading levels.
- Students can install and use the mobile app for Memrise by going to the Apple App Store or Google Play store and downloading the Memrise app, so they can also use their mobile devices for more practice while away from school.
