ABE: Adult Basic Education

Students use the PhET Number Line: Operations simulation to explore addition and subtraction of positive and negative integers. Through hands-on investigation, students visualize integer operations as movements on a number line and develop conceptual understanding of why integer rules work. Students collaborate with partners to make predictions, test ideas, and explain patterns observed in the simulation.

Students use the PhET Number Line: Integers interactive simulation to explore positive and negative numbers, opposites, absolute value, and integer operations. Through hands-on investigation, students visualize how integers are represented on a number line and discover how movement along the number line models real-world situations involving gains, losses, elevations, temperatures, and financial transactions.

In this activity, students create a PicLit (a combination of words placed on an image to capture the essence, story, and meaning of the picture) that identifies one SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely) goal for the school year.

PicLits is a website where students can choose from a variety of interesting and beautiful images and drag and drop provided words to create short compositions or type in their own words. PicLits, according to site founder Terry Friedlander, means pictures + literacy: "a combination of words placed on an image to capture the essence, story, and meaning of the picture. It can be anything—a sentence, a caption, a poem, a single word, a rap, a quote, and more." The site is perfect for students to experiment with poetry, but it can also be used for prose (descriptive and narrative) writing projects.

PIXIR is a powerful image tool that students can use without logging on. For this activity, we are only going to use the filter menu to learn how to work with filters and effects. This works as well on the computer as on a mobile device.
