Activity Description

In this activity, use the flashcards to drill students on the irregular past verb forms or have students use the flashcards and other activities for review and practice.


  1. Make sure that the Example Web Site (above) is not blocked at your school site.
  2. Familiarize yourself with how the flashcards work as well as the other activities (at the bottom of the page) to be able to demonstrate and assist students. In this activity, students will be studying Past Tense Verbs, but if you would rather study a different topic, Study Stack has many other flashcard sets pre-made. To find them, select the Study Stack logo and browse from there.
  3. Choose which other activities students will work with in class. Decide if you would like to assign others as homework.


  1. Open the Example Web Site (above) on the instructors computer to demonstrate for students how to use the flashcards and to cover the verbs located there.
  2. Review the flashcard verbs by clicking on each flashcard to see the past tense of the verb provided. There are 56 flashcards.
  3. As a whole class or individually in a computer lab setting, students can do the other activities to practice the irregular past tense verbs and quiz themselves. The other activities include the following: matching, hangman, crossword, type in, quiz, test, unscramble and more.

Teacher Tips

  • Students or teachers can print the list (using the Print link below the activity buttons), and lists on the site can be embedded on a Web page (using the <embed> link below the activity buttons), or shared by e-mail or on social networking sites (using the share icons).
  • Students can use a variety of apps to study these pre-made flashcards and flashcards you create and share with them. Here is info on which apps Study Stack works with , and buttons to export the Study Stack data .

  • Teachers (or students) can enter their own vocabulary lists, reading-based questions, or other types of language lists on the site. Compile a list of vocabulary words you want students to learn, corresponding to a unit or lesson you plan to teach (food, animals, clothing, for example, or an academic word list or a list of vocabulary words from texts that will be used in class). To create flashcards for students to study, follow these steps:
    1. Go to the Study Stack site, select Free Sign Up and create an account.
    2. You will see your dashboard. Select Create New Stack.
    3. Give the stack a name, description, category, select slide labels (question/answer, term/definition, or custom).
    4. Select whether or not to prevent other users from modifying data and whether or not to generate random fill-in-the-blank clues for activities.
    5. Select Save Changes.
    6. Select the Data tab to enter your list (questions and answers or terms and definitions).
    7. Select + add blank rows to add more rows.
    8. Select Save Changes after the information has been entered.
    9. Students can study flashcards or play timed games.
