Activity Description

Use the lesson activities in the booklet as introductory or supplementary materials for teaching EL Civics units on American culture, citizenship, community, health, and safety.


  1. Select an activity that fits with your class objectives.
  2. Print the activity and photocopy for distribution to students.
  3. Note vocabulary that may be unfamiliar to your students so be prepared to pre-teach new words.
  4. Go through the activity yourself to anticipate difficulties or questions students may have.
  5. Make sure that Web sites listed in the activity work. If not, find alternate Web sites.


  1. Introduce the topic with a warm-up or by asking students questions related to the topic.
  2. Pre-teach vocabulary students will need to understand in order to complete the activity.
  3. Explain the activity by modeling.
  4. Have students complete the activity (some activities require Internet use) individually or in pairs or small groups.
  5. Have students submit their work to be checked or have students compare their answers/results with classmates and then discuss with the entire class.
  6. Continue with the next activities you have planned in your lesson for the EL Civics unit the activity corresponds to.
