Activity Description

For this activity, students use the Internet to gather information and take notes for a presentation about a well-known historical figure in science, arts, music, politics, etc. Students work individually at first to gather information and then later in teams grouped by type of figure (humanitarians, politicians, for example) to discover what, if any factors, contribute to a person’s success. Then they will enter information and images on a PowerPoint (or other slideshow software) template file, and make a team oral presentation.


  1. Plan a lesson to review biography vocabulary and simple past tense.
  2. Choose the Web sites you will have students use to gather information, which may be any of the following, and make sure that they are not blocked at your school:
  3. Download and modify the assignment prompt / note-taking form (Example Document - Project Description, ..., above), as desired. Make photocopies.


  1. Review simple past tense and biography vocabulary (see Project Description, ... handout).
  2. Following Part II of the handout, have students practice asking and answering questions about themselves and their own biography.
  3. Assign or allow students to choose a historical figure.

  5. After students have taken notes about the individual historical figure they have researched, group students in teams based on types of historical figures (all political leaders on one team, all athletes on one team, etc.).
  6. Show students the sample PowerPoint presentation (Example Document - Sample Team Presentation). Have students work together on their teams to compare the individuals they have researched, finding commonalities and using the chart on the assignment prompt. When students have compiled the necessary information, have them work together to create a PowerPoint or poster presentation. If PowerPoint or other presentation software is used, students will follow the sample by having a title slide, typing in the information about each person they researched, and including a comparison slide and images with a conclusion slide. Have them save their files and share with you (by e-mail attachment or saving on a USB device).
  7. Ask them to practice their presentations, deciding who will talk about which slide(s).
  8. On presentation day, open the files, run the slideshow (Slide Show – from Beginning) and have students present their information.
  9. Use the Team Presentation Evaluation form (the last page on the handout) to grade or provide feedback on the team presentations.

Teacher Tips

  • You may want to create a general PowerPoint template for students to download, if you do plan to have them use PowerPoint and if they are not very familiar with how to use this software.
