Abstract:
The digest addresses the need to reorient the college-level ESL curriculum to serve students with a high degree of oral fluency but little proficiency in reading and writing. Often these students are refugee youth missing a consistent opportunity for education in any country or language. Discussed are identification of developmental academic ESL students and how the teacher can help them with "cognitive academic language proficiency."
