Upcoming OTAN Activities to Support Adult Educators – Week of 5/4

OTAN has scheduled a number of online webinars and Office Hours for our adult education colleagues who are continuing to teach and support their learners. (All times below are PDT.)

  • Visit OTAN’s COVID-19 Field Support webpage that we are continually updating with relevant information for teachers, students, and administrators: COVID-19 Field Support

  • OTAN Office Hours provide an opportunity to ask more detailed questions and get support on specific tools to use with students. You can sign up for these OTAN Office Hours at the California Adult Education Training Calendar:

    • Monday, May 4 from 3:30 to 4:30 (rescheduled from 1:00)

    • Wednesday, May 6 from 4:00 to 5:00

    • Friday, May 8 from 10:00 to 11:00

  • On Monday at 10:00am and repeated at 1:30pm, the CDE Adult Education Office and CASAS will present Remote CASAS Pre and Post Testing. This webinar session will help you understand how you can begin to complete pre/post and appraisal tests with your students.   • On Tuesday at 9:00am, Melinda Holt will present Google Slides and Draw. Google Slides and Drawings allows users to collaborate and work together in real time. During this webinar, participants will be given tips and tricks to use Google's Slides app in a remote learning environment.   • On Tuesday at 1:00pm, CASAS will present Distance Learning Considerations: Part II. This workshop follows up on the distance learning issues that have become hot topics during COVID-19. This picks up from the previous distance learning overview and provides more specific examples of recording instructional hours and learner outcomes when everyone is learning remotely.   • On Wednesday at 10:00am, Blair Roy and Susan Coulter will host Office Hours for Maximizing Moodle. The many features and resources available in Moodle can be daunting to new users. Join us to get one-on-one support, help, suggestions and just plain old encouragement in using Moodle with learners. Attending teachers will drive the session with their questions and needs.   • On Wednesday at 1:00pm, Brian Dunn will present HiSET Best Practices: COVID-19 & Closures. This webinar will share up-to-date information on how adult educators and test centers can manage HiSET Exam preparation and testing through this crisis.   • On Thursday at 11:00am, Corina Kasior will present Flex Your Digital Muscles! During this webinar, participants will learn how to utilize free digital tools that will assist them in delivering instruction at a distance. The tools presented will target each level of technical ability and participants will get to experience the tools as a student - all levels are welcome!   • On Friday at 10:00am, Kristi Reyes will present Best Practices for High-Quality Online Instruction. High-quality online teaching includes active learning, interaction, participation, and collaboration. The teacher provides timely and regular feedback and use tools within and external to a course management system for instruction, student practice, and assessment that are well-suited to various tasks within the discipline / subject.   • On Friday at 1:00pm, Rob Fleisher will present CommonLit: A Free Online Literacy Program for All. CommonLit is an evidence-based online reading and writing program that is designed to support all learners. Educators use CommonLit to leverage its library of 1,500+ English and 500+ Spanish literacy lessons. By the end of the webinar all teachers will know how they can set up their free teacher account and begin configuring their online classrooms with CommonLit.
