Upcoming OTAN Activities to Support Adult Educators – Week of 4/13

OTAN has scheduled a number of online webinars and Office Hours for our adult education colleagues who are continuing to teach and support their learners.

  • Visit OTAN’s COVID-19 Field Support webpage that we are continually updating with relevant information for teachers, students, and administrators: COVID-19 Field Support

  • OTAN Office Hours provide an opportunity to ask more detailed questions and get support on specific tools to use with students. You can sign up for these OTAN Office Hours at the California Adult Education Training Calendar:

    • Monday, April 13 from 1:00 to 2:00

    • Wednesday, April 15 from 4:00 to 5:00

    • Friday, April 17 from 10:00 to 11:00

  • On Monday at 11:00am, Dani Pedrotti and Beth Pickett will present Boost Online Class Engagement with HippoCampus. HippoCampus for Adult Educators offers a free, easy-to-access collection of more than 7,000 videos, animations, and interactive simulations covering core academic subjects, including math and language arts. Come learn what's available, how to find what you need, and how to create a playlist of your favorite content. You can sign up for this webinar at the California Adult Education Training Calendar.

  • On Monday at 1:00pm, Jennifer Gagliardi will present Teaching with YouTube. Learn how to set up your own YouTube channel, identify appropriate channels to create and build strong playlists for Adult Learners, and then deliver quality content to your students outside of the classroom.   • On Tuesday at 10:00, Andrea Willis will present USA Learns: Free Online ESL and Citizenship Courses. USA Learns English and Citizenship courses use engaging multimedia and interactive activities to teach listening, vocabulary, grammar, spelling, pronunciation, reading, writing, speaking, and life skills. This presentation will show teachers how to use the courses as a student and as a teacher. You can sign up for this webinar at the California Adult Education Training Calendar.

  • On Tuesday at 1:00pm, Francisco Pinedo will present Using Zoom as a Distance Learning Tool. This session will guide instructors on how to use Zoom as a component for distance and remote learning and will demonstrate how to do a review lesson with students and allow for time to practice.   • On Wednesday at 9:00am, Melinda Holt will present Introduction to Google Forms and Quizzes. This workshop will show the basic layout of a Form's settings, how to create a form, how users input data on a form, viewing data (after submission) within the form AND the sheet, how to create quizzes and assign points to questions, and more as time allows.   • On Wednesday at 12:00pm, Stacey Campo will present Remote Learning Templates. Learn how to use a Google Slide template or Smore.com to create an interactive and engaging learning agenda. This will encourage students to stay engaged and provide access to support remote and/ blended learning strategies.   • On Thursday at 10:00am, CASAS will present Recording DL in TOPSpro Enterprise. Capture the attendance hours properly in TOPSpro Enterprise (TE). This session will build on the CASAS presentation on Distance Learning Implementation reporting requirements and demonstrate how and when to mark a class as “distance learning” and the TE reports which show this data.   • On Thursday at 1:00pm, Susan Gaer will present Gamify Your Classroom with Online Tools. You will learn how to search for games or flashcard sets for study, develop games and flashcard sets, and monitor progress (through formative assessment, for example) using one or several online tools.   • On Friday at 10:00am, Kristi Reyes will present Discover – or Rediscover – Padlet. Participants will learn step by step how to make a Padlet wall and explore the new types of Padlet possibilities (shelf, backchannel, map, and timeline).   • On Friday at 2:00pm, Paul Yung will present Distance Learning with Putting English to Work in Moodle. Participate in this workshop to experience Putting English to Work from the teacher and the student’s perspective. View how to manage the online class, review student work and grades, and discover strategies to keep student engagement and retention high.
