National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week is a nationwide celebration of the millions of adults who are improving their lives through education. This year AEFL week will be celebrated September 14 – 18, 2026

This week recognizes the vital role adult education plays in helping individuals earn a high school credential, improve English language skills, prepare for college and careers, gain workforce credentials, and support their families.

Join us as we celebrate our learners, recognize our community partners, and showcase the impact adult education has on our local community. We invite you to explore these resources, participate in the webinars, and uplift adult education!

History & Purpose

Adult Education and Family Literacy Week (AEFL Week) has been celebrated annually since 2009. It was established in that year by the National Coalition for Literacy in collaboration with then‑Congressman Jared Polis (D‑CO), Senator Lamar Alexander (R‑TN), and Senator Patty Murray (D‑WA) to create a Congressionally‑recognized designation highlighting the importance of adult education and family literacy.

Since its inception, AEFL Week has been observed each September, with activities and advocacy efforts led by the National Coalition for Literacy and other organizations, and supported by educators, partners and policymakers. The week aims to raise public awareness, secure resources, and promote access to education for adults in need of literacy, numeracy, and digital skills.
