The Heart of a Teacher: The Power of tREACHING
The Power of Treaching

Efrain Tovar, 2023 CUE Teacher of the Year, explains “if we see [students] as capable, resilient, and worthy, they will rise to meet those expectations.” And conversely, if we view students as “limited” or “at risk,” these labels may become “barriers to their potential.” tReaching, says Tovar, “challenges us to reexamine our assumptions and approach teaching with empathy, curiosity, and purpose.”
What is tREACHING?
While we realize in adult education the benefits of relationship building, tREACHING serves as a reminder to make the deliberate effort to understand your students.
- Build trust and relationships. Connect with a greeting, genuine smile and/or a simple, “how are you today?”
- Affirm their identities. Honor what each individual brings to the classroom.
- Engage their humanity. Recognize and celebrate the whole person in front of you.
- Empower them to succeed. Set high expectations but scaffold their journey with patience and support.
The Heart of a Teacher
TREACHING begins with belief-the belief that every student, no matter their background or starting point is capable of greatness. It’s a call to action for educators to lead with their hearts and connect on a human level before diving into academics. Because when we reach first, teaching becomes not just an act, but a gift. And in giving we discover the true heart of a teacher.
