Should Students Chat with AI Versions of Historical Figures?

Veteran producer and professor, Lynn Rogoff, has “long experimented with ways to bring history alive for people” and was quick to try AI to meet this goal. Her latest film, “Bird Woman: Sacagawea,” a person can “not only watch the story of Sacagawea...they can chat with her and ask questions about her life.” At least a person chats with an animated, video game AI-generated character. This style is meant to engage and interact with history like the latest consumer video game.

Many educators would like students to delve into primary documents and not experience history through an AI filter. However, primary documents are not easy to read. The language can feel unnatural and out of today’s context for today’s students.
