Education Department releases highly anticipated AI toolkit for schools

The federal guidance, prompted by a Biden administration executive order, includes district strategies for mitigating risks and developing AI use policies.

This 74-page toolkit, published October 25,2024, is designed to assist K-12 leaders make decisions about “AI applications into student learning and instructional core.”

Briefly:

The toolkit outlined its guidance into the following three sections:

  • Mitigating risks while safeguarding students’ privacy, security and civil rights.
  • Building a strategy for integrating AI use which best fits student needs.
  • Guiding effective AI use to boost teaching and learning.

The Education department wrote this guidance after public listening sessions it held with 90 educators between December 2023 and March 2024. Additional to these sessions were roundtables hosted by the department with education leaders.
