One of the recent digital equity developments to take place, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, is the rise of digital navigators in communities around the US. According to NDIA (the National Digital Inclusion Alliance), “Digital navigators are trusted guides who assist community members with ongoing, individualized support for accessing affordable and appropriate connectivity, devices, and digital skills.”

World Education and Goodwill Industries International have partnered to create a self-paced Digital Navigator training program. The Goodwill Digital Navigator Certificate Specialization, available at no cost on the Coursera platform, is a program comprised of three courses: The Digital Divide, The New Digital Workplace, and Building Your Community Resources. By taking these courses, a learner will understand the digital divide and digital navigation as an intervention; learn more about the types of interventions digital navigators can provide, including best practices in customer service, cultural competency, and service plan development; and identify strategies and partnerships within their local communities and put together an individualized asset map of resources.
