Applying Universal Design for Learning in Adult Education
According to the California Adult Education Digital Learning Guidance, Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is “a flexible, learner-centered framework that helps educators design learning experiences that are accessible to all learners. Rather than focusing on designing accommodations for individual learners, the framework encourages educators to provide multiple means of engagement, representation, and action and expression for all learners.”
The Division of Adult Education and Literacy (DAEL) at the Office of Career, Technical, and Adult Education (OCTAE), in partnership with CAST, has developed seven online modules to help adult education instructors, administrators, and programs learn more about Universal Design for Learning and create an educational environment where all students can thrive. Based on the UDL principles, the modules feature video case studies, key ideas in adult education, pro tips, and activities that educators can use in their classrooms right away. These free modules were designed with the help of current adult education instructors and administrators with the idea that they can be widely shared within adult education programs.
