Students can practice a listening activity for directions. Students must have a sound cloud account to do this on their own.

Preparation

1. Get a soundcloud account. If you want students to do this on their own, they must also have an account.

Teacher Tips

  • The site supports AIFF, WAVE (WAV), FLAC, ALAC, OGG, MP2, MP3, AAC, AMR, and WMA files.
  • The maximum file size is 5GB. If the audio file is more than 6 hours and 45 minutes long, the system will not be able to process it.
  • A free SoundCloud account permits a total of 180 minutes of recorded content.
  • To share a post with students, log in to SoundCloud, select Home, select the post, and choose Share. You can share by posting on social networking, direct link, e-mail, embedding, or sending in a message.
  • From the app and on the Web site, students can search by name of user, title, or topic of post, but due to the content of some of the podcasts/posts, we would highly recommend that you do not allow the students to just "explore" at will.

More Ways

  • Use the site to create audio files for any type of listening you would like for students to do. Students can also create audio files: reading a paragraph, introducing themselves, writing and reading a “Who Am I” script, interviews, radio talk show, news broadcast, weekly class podcast, practice pronunciation, any oral presentation.

Lesson Plan

Warm-up
Engagement Enhancement

Activate prior knowledge about places in the community and basic directions.

Use flashcards or realia with pictures: post office, school, supermarket, park, hospital, bank, bus stop. Show each and say, “What is this?”
Students repeat after you. Practice pronunciation slowly: “This is a bank.”
Ask: “Where do you go to buy food?” (Elicit: supermarket)
TPR (Total Physical Response): When you say “go left,” students turn left; say “go right,” they turn right, etc.

Distribute the map to students in the class.

Practice the following vocabulary with the students:

Introduction
Engagement

Today, we will listen and look at a map. You will learn how to find places and understand directions like ‘turn right’ and ‘go straight.’”
Have students look at the map  and point to places: “This is a school. This is a park.”

Presentation
Engagement Enhancement

Steps:

Play the first audio clip from the SoundCloud list (choose a short one with directions).
Show the same map students have on the screen or projector.
As the audio plays, point to the path being described. Model it again slowly.
Pause after each sentence to ask students, “What did you hear?” or “Where do we go?”

Practice
Engagement Enhancement Extension

Have students listen to each clip from 3-10 in pairs or small groups. Have them find the location and/or answer the questions.

Evaluation
Engagement Enhancement

Give students a short evaluation to check understanding using thumbs up and thumbs down for yes or no.

Is the school next to the park? etc.

Application
Engagement Enhancement Extension

Have the students create a map of their neighborhood. Pair up students and have them practice giving directions to places in their neighborhood.
