LearnZillion: Fractions (mobile app)
Details
Activity Description
LearnZillion is a library of digital resources developed by teachers targeting the Common Core State Standards. You can set up a class and make an assignment having students enroll into LearnZillion to access assignments, or you can use quick codes which allow students to use the videos without a login. They offer video lessons as well as lesson plans. Students can use their mobile devices to access the lessons and quizzes. In this lesson students learn how to add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators.
Preparation
- Start by getting a free LearnZillion teacher account .
- Preview the 'Add fractions with unlike denominators' videos. Each video has a few other resources below it. If this video does not meet your students' needs, feel free to choose another.
- Next set up a class and with your roster of student names add your students . Access codes will be assigned each student by LearnZillion.
- From the Lesson Set page, choose one of the videos, then select "Assign." On the next page you will see the list of your students and can assign the video to appropriate students. Check all that apply.
- Give students their enrollment codes. Instruct them to set up a LearnZillion account. To help students with this step, you can print Enrollment Codes prepared by LearnZillion. These cards give the student their enrollment codes and step-by-step instructions for how to enroll.
- If you have a set of tablets for student use, download and install the apps on the devices or request your IT people to do so. If students will be using their own devices, help students download and install the appropriate app.
- Print Example Document - Adding Fractions Worksheet or Quiz (above).
How-To
- Demonstrate the LearnZillion site to the class.
- Walk through the enrollment procedure using one student as an example if this was not accomplished in the class Prep.
- Use the Example Web Site link (above) to show students the assignment.
- Demonstrate how to use the app on their mobile device.
- Handout Example Document - Adding Fractions Worksheet or Quiz for additional practice or quiz in class.
Teacher Tips
- Setting up your class, selecting and assigning lessons will take time.
- You may need to demonstrate how to use the site both on the computer and mobile devices multiple times.
- As some students learn how to use the site, assign them to assist other students.
- Each lesson breaks the topic into parts that are addressed by short videos, making reading levels less of an issue. This is particularly important for ABE students.
More Ways
- LearnZillion is expansive. It not only covers mathematics topics but English and Language Arts topics as well. We encourage you to spend some time exploring this site. It is great for "flipping your classroom."
- There are at least three ways to look for materials at the site. Browse the site by Topic (Math or ELA) then choose a grade level, then an appropriate CC Standard; Use their Common Core Navigator; or just use their Search field to look for something very specific. Some items are video lessons and some include full lessons.
