GCF LearnFree provides help with basic math in the areas of subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, and percents. With an emphasis on images and interactives, their math tutorials make learning math easier. The tutorials are designed to be like a math workbook, so learners can practice what they learn directly within the lessons and learn at their own pace.

Preparation

  1. Preview the site to get comforatble with how it works so you can explain it to your students if there are questions.
  2. Decide which topic to focus on.
  3. Find the page in your class textbook which deals with the same topic.
  4. Post the page(s) on the board.

Teacher Tips

  • On the second day, provide five review problems to see if they understood yesterday's lesson.

More Ways

  • Go through each of the sections: addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions, decimals, and percents
  • The GCF LearnFree site has so many resources that it's hard to know where to start. Go out to the home page and browse around, especially in the Everyday Life, Reading, Work and Career, and Technology sections.

Program Areas

  • ABE: Adult Basic Education
  • ASE: High School Equivalency Preparation

Lesson Plan

Warm-up
Engagement
  1. Have students turn to their partners and share what they have learned in the last math lesson.
  2. How can they use what they learned in their daily lives?
Introduction
  1. Introduce the GCF LearnFree math site
  2. Show one of the topics
  3. Do the interactive section as a class
Presentation
  1. Introduce the topic and the importance of knowing how to do this.
  2. Show a video on this topic.
  3. Do the interactive section as a class
Practice
Engagement
  1. Assign small groups the textbook page to work on together.
  2. Set a timer.
  3. Go over any problems the groups are having trouble with.
  4. Post the answers for groups to check their work.
Evaluation
  1. Walk around the room while students are working in their small groups to access student learning.
  2. Identify any gaps in their learning and reteach if necessary.
Application
Engagement Extension
  1. Have students turn to their partners and share what they have learned in this math lesson.
  2. How can they use what they learned in their daily lives?
  3. Have students share with the whole group.
