Vocab Test: Online Vocabulary Practice

Activity Description

Students will use the Example Web Site to practice vocabulary from the textbook Worldly Wise 3000 Book 5. Alternatively, teachers (or students) can enter word lists to create their own online exercises for target vocabulary.

Preparation

1. Make sure that the Example Web Site (above) is not blocked at your school site and that it works as it should. Become familiar with the exercises you want your student to complete.
2. Check the site's vocabulary lists to see if they are appropriate for the level and learning objectives of your class. Many of the word lists will be too difficult for ESL students, with perhaps, the exception of the Worldly Wise 3000 Book 5 lists (20 units with 11 exercises and 5 games).
3. Choose which exercises you want students to complete:
   • Learning Definitions, Reverse Definitions
   • Vocabulary Sentences, Reverse Sentences
   • Synonym Practice, Reverse Synonyms
   • Antonyms, Revers Antonyms
   • Parts of Speech
   • Stress Marks
   • Spelling Fill-in
   • Games (Play VocaBuzz!, Synonym Slots, Word Search, Crosswords, Moving Memory)

How-To

1. Go to the Example Web Site (above).
2. Select the exercise to complete and explain to students how to advance through the exercise.
3. Assign the various exercises you would like students to complete. Provide students with a link to the Web site. For ideas on how to do this, see the Teacher Tips section below.
4. Optionally, have students e-mail you or print out their results.

Teacher Tips

• If you do not have a vocabulary text for your class, the lists on the site could be the basis of your vocabulary instruction in class, with the Web site exercises providing students with extra practice and testing.
• In order get students to the Web site, you can make it a Favorite or Bookmark the site on each computer browser, e-mail them the link, e-mail a word processing document with the link in it, or post the link on your class Web page.
• Many sites, like this one, have advertising. Teach your students what it looks like and how to avoid selecting it since many times it contains malware that they will not want on their computers, at school or at home. It is a very important and necessary skill for them to know.

More Ways

• The site also has exercises to learn and study 15 units of common word parts (morphemes) .
• Use the site to create vocabulary exercises based on target words you are teaching in class. Students can also make their own exercises. Prepare a word list and definitions (and, optionally, model sentences). To do this:
  1. Go to the Web site's home page .
  2. Create an account (optional) or simply select Create a User Test. NOTE: You cannot create printable tests without an account, but you will be able to create online tests/exercises.
  3. Enter a Username, Test Name, and E-mail address (the URL for the exercises will be emailed to you, but by not creating an account, you will not be able to edit the word list/exercises).
  4. Enter the number of words (minimum of six).
  5. On the Basic Editing tab, enter the words and definitions, or choose the Advanced Editing tab to be able to enter the part of speech, a hint, a sentence, synonym, and antonym for each word.
  6. Save your work.
• You will be e-mailed a unique Web address (URL) for the word list, which includes links to the following exercise types: Learning Definitions (matching terms to multiple-choice definitions), Reverse Definitions (choosing the one term that matches the definition), Spelling Practice (type the word defined and hear audio of word), and three games (VocaBuzz!, Word Search, and Crosswords.
• Results can be e-mailed or printed.
