IXL: Math Practice - Slopes of Lines

Details

Activity Description

Slope of a Line

This activity gives students the needed practice to reinforce classroom instruction on Slope. Students are asked to find the slope given a line on the Coordinate Plane, two points on a line, and a linear equation. Students who answer incorrectly are given an explanation of the correct solution and an opportunity to try again.

This site requires a paid membership; however, you are permitted free access to 20 questions per day. IXL provides differentiated instruction and tracks student progress with a paid subscription. The questions will automatically increase in difficulty as the student improves.

Preparation

  1. Check to be sure that the site is not blocked by your school.
  2. Be sure to review the topic of Slopes of Lines the day before and besure the Web site problems work as they should.
  3. Try some of the exercises to check the difficulty level. Students will need to be able to add and subtract positive and negative integers. Review if necessary.
  4. All answers are to be given as a proper fraction, improper fraction, integer, or formula. Review if necessary.

How-To

  1. Introduce the lesson and discuss the High School Equivalency test and the importance of being able to find the slope of a line. Try to use real life applications.
  2. Teach the concept of slope and the different ways slope can be determined.
  3. Use the problem presented for Slopes of lines to generate equations.
  4. If you have access to a computer lab, give students time to practice their skills. Walk around the room, to view their scores. If students have Internet access at home, encourage students to practice their skills at home and record their scores.
  5. The next day discuss any problems students had with the problems and re-teach as necessary.
  6. Check for understanding by giving a short formative quiz.
  7. Re-teach concepts as needed.

Teacher Tips

  • All answers are to be given as a proper fraction, improper fraction, or integer. Be sure your students understand those terms.
  • Reviews are mixed as to the reliability of some of the answers, so be sure you work all the problems to check on their accuracy before assigning to students. Rounding could be the issue as different calculators and programs round differently.
  • Math Warehouse offers a video explanation of the topic on computing the slopes of lines if that would be helpful for your independent study students.
  • Here is a Slope Worksheet and Activity page from Math Worksheets Go! .
