Activity Description

Use this site with intermediate and advanced students for reading practice and building reading fluency with audio support. There are currently 43+ audio stories at the site.

Preparation

1. Make sure that the site it not blocked at your school before using it with students.
2. Select a text that fits with your teaching objectives and is appropriate for your students’ level of English.
3. Browse stories by selecting Audio Stories on the right panel. Select a story title to see the complete story.
4. Set the volume on the computer to an adequate level.
5. Copy and paste the story into a word-processing program if you would like to distribute a printed photocopy of the story to students.

How-To

1. Open the Example Web site (above).
2. Select the story you have chosen by selecting its title.
3. Project the story from the computer or distribute the story if you have photocopied it.
4. Select the Play button for the audio player on the Web site, located above the story. .
5. Have students listen to the text as they read along.
6. Optionally, have students read the texts aloud in pairs or small groups to practice fluency and pronunciation.
7. Use the student activities lesson for the Black Dog story if you chose that story.

• The audio player is within the browser, so there are no downloads needed. You can turn off the chirping cricket background sound on the site by selecting Sound Off in the top right corner of the site.
• If projecting a story from the computer, you can change the font/letter size by selecting one of the "A"s to the top-right of the story.
• Choose Share/Save for e-mailing and posting on a social network.
• The Web site has some advertising, mostly not distracting, however.

More Ways

Follow up with the student activity and/or comprehension and/or vocabulary activities, oral or written summary or personal response questions, or extension activities you prepare ahead of time, based on the text you select.
