Increasing Vocabulary with Games

Details

Activity Description

Use this intermediate adjective antonym game as a warm-up, review, or filler activity as a whole class, for individual student practice in a computer lab setting, or as a team competition.

Preparation

  1. Make sure that the Web site is not blocked at your school before using it with students.
  2. There are several games on the site, so find one that fits best with your students' English level and your teaching objectives. The one presented in this activity is a matching exercise using intermediate level adjective antonyms.
  3. Go through the game yourself in order to anticipate students' difficulties. Note vocabulary that may be unfamiliar to them, which you will want to pre-teach.

How-To

These are the steps for this particular game. Each of the site's many games are played differently, depending on which you choose to use with your class.

  1. Open the Example Web Site (above) for the game. Project it from the computer, if you have chosen to include the game in your lesson as a whole-class activity. (An interactive whiteboard would work well too.)
  2. Begin the first level (there are three levels). Elicit from students or have students match adjective opposites by selecting a word in left column followed by selecting its antonym in right column. After the first level is completed, go on to the second and third levels.

Teacher Tips

The site's many games are good filler activities. Preview the site and choose a few games as back-up activities to use anytime your lesson plan ends quickly.
