LingualNet - Learning English Through Media: English Wizz Game

Details

Activity Description

Use this Jeopardy-style game with questions on English vocabulary, grammar, and U.S. and world knowledge as a warm-up at the beginning of class, as a filler activity, as a whole-class activity, or a team competition.

Preparation

  1. Make sure that the Web site is not blocked at your school.
  2. Play the game through once yourself to anticipate students' difficulties and to check that the level is appropriate for your class. Note: The questions are different each time you play the game.

How-To

  1. Open the Example Web Site above.
  2. Project the game on a screen in the classroom from the teacher's computer.
  3. Make sure that the volume is at an appropriate level.
  4. Select the level (Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced).
  5. Wait for the audio to finish explaining how the game is played. Explain to students how you will play the game in class (as a whole-class activity with individuals choosing questions to answer, as a pair or small group activity in which students answer questions collectively, or as a team competition).
  6. Let students choose their categories and point values.
  7. Be sure the timer is set to "ON" and select a question. Students have 10 seconds to provide an answer to the multiple-choice question. As students provide the answers, select it from the teacher's computer. Or if you have an Interactive Whiteboard, have someone from the team answering the question to come up and select the correct answer. The game provides feedback on the accuracy of the answer. The game provides one score. For a team competition, you will need to write teams' scores on the board.

Teacher Tips

  • There are three levels of the game - Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. The Beginning level is probably best suited to Low Intermediate adult ESL students, but you will need to check, because every class is different and your students' ability to answer the questions will depend on what they have learned in class.
  • There are 24 questions in six categories. There is a 10-second timer for the questions to be answered, which can be turned off. The questions change each time the game is played.
  • If you have played the game before and heard the instructions, you can select the Skip Intro button.

More Ways

  • The Web site has three other games:
    • Listening Master - Learn Science, History, and American Pop Culture;
    • True Love - follow the love story and interact with the characters;
    • Idiom Power - Match each idiom with the best meaning.
  • Listening Master and Idiom Power are available from iTunes mobile apps for Apple products, and Idiom Power is also available as an app on iOS and Android.
  • Additionally, there are numerous short video clips with a synopsis and transcript grouped in the following categories: Music, Documentary, Comedy, Celebrity, Drama, Animation, Food, Science. Some of the videos have quizzes. To find the videos, just select the Home link or one of the actual categories on the navigation bar.
