EDSITEment!: Women's History Month - First Ladies' Image Analysis

Details

Activity Description

In this activity, the class will examine different traditional roles of first ladies, including: setting fashion standards, uplifting national spirit in times of crisis, serving as a White House representative, campaigning for her husband, and/or promoting charities and causes. Besides investigating the topic, students will evaluate Web information using an online image analysis worksheet.

Preparation

  1. Preview Web sites and images linked at the main activity page.
  2. Make color photocopies (if available) of some of the images found in Activity 2 at the Web Site above or provide students with the link to this page so they can look at the images online.
  3. Provide students the link to the online Photo Analysis Worksheet (PDF). You can do this by bookmarking the link on each computer, creating a Word document with an active link, or placing the link on your class Web site.

How-To

  1. To small groups, assign an appropriate number of images of First Ladies found in Activity 2.
  2. Appoint a spokesperson for each group.
  3. Give the groups time to analyze their images using the document above in the Wed Site Example.
  4. Then, the group spokesperson should share the image with the class, describe it, and hypothesize about the First Lady role represented.
  5. Make a list of the traditional First Lady roles that come up through this discussion and save it for future reference.

Teacher Tips

This exercise can be extended to include non-traditional roles of First Ladies and including a list of first ladies that had non-traditional roles (See Activity 3 also available at this site).
