Activity Description

The free typing test and typing tutor on Learn 2 Type offers online typing lessons and tests. Assign beginning typists to use this free keyboarding Web site to learn how to type or more advanced keyboardists can practice their speed and accuracy.

Preparation

1. Make sure that the Web site is not blocked on the computers students will use.
2. Go through the site to find activities appropriate to your students' abilities.

How-To

1. Demonstrate for students how to use the Web site and do the activities by projecting from a classroom computer.
2. For the typing test, students should go to the Web Site Example (above).
3. Students type in the paragraph shown and select "Test Me!" They will be provided with a speed and accuracy evaluation.
4. Students can be assigned to repeat the test on a daily or weekly basis and to record their improvement on a chart.

Teacher Tips

• There is nothing to download. Students can learn to type with lessons or improve their typing by taking the typing speed test to check WPM or ten key speed.
• No registration is required, but students can register and login to continue where they left off on previous typing exercises. With registration, test performances are recorded into one's account.

• The interactive typing exercises and tests in the tutorial automatically adjust to the user's individual skill level. The better a user becomes at typing, the more challenging the typing drills become.
