EconEdLink: Using an Excel Checkbook

Activity Description
In this lesson, students will use a check register template to enter fictitious transactions. They will also be given a bank statement to reconcile their checkbook with. Your students will enjoy the ease of using technology to make banking easy but gain the concepts of determining the adjusted bank and checkbook balances.
Preparation
- Go to the teacher's lesson plan (see the Web Site Example above), select View Student Version (on the right side of the page), and Print this lesson (also on the right) for your students.
- Save the Check Register Template (provided under Resources) on each student's computer.
- Print a copy of the Checkbook Guide (provided under Process) for each student.
- Review the teacher's lesson plan.
- Be sure students are familiar with the following before conducting this lesson: basic spreadsheet terminology (rows, columns, functions, etc.); how to enter information in a spreadsheet; knowledge of basic functions (addition, subtraction); basic computer and Web navigation.
How-To
Distribute copies of the student version of the lesson and follow the lesson plan outlined in the Web Site Example shown above.
Teacher Tips
If you do not have Microsoft Excel, you can download Open Office for free or use Google Docs spreadsheet program.
