Details

Activity Description

Students compare maps to explore relationships between high and low population density, transportation corridors, climate, and land cover in the United States. Students will be able to:

  • create a thematic map showing population density in the United States
  • describe the patterns on the thematic map and the reasons for them
  • compare two thematic maps and recognize relationships between different layers of information

Preparation

  1. Scroll down the page and review site tabs labeled Directions, Objectives, Preparation, and Background & Vocabulary
  2. Provide students with paper, markers, scissors, either single or double sided removable tape (so you don't damage your map), and a large map of the United States. If your school does not have one, you could use the online MapMaker Kit which you can use to print off map pieces which can be taped together to form a larger map (in this case you will need regular transparent tape).
  3. Another Web site you will need for students to visit is U.S. Census Bureau: Population Estimates .

How-To

  1. Discuss how maps are used to convey information. Ask students what types of maps they may have seen in the newspaper, textbooks, or on the Web and what types of information they displayed.
  2. Cover any new vocabulary necessary for your learners.
  3. Using the detailed lesson plan for the Population Density in the United States activity that you will find under the Directions tab, conduct the lesson.

More Ways

  • For Further Exploration:
