Students investigate diffusion using Concord Consortium's interactive simulations. Through observation and experimentation, students explore how molecules move from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration due to random motion. Students use the simulations to examine factors that affect diffusion, including concentration, temperature, molecular mass, and membrane transport.

Preparation

  1. Check the website to ensure it is not blocked at your site.
  2. Go to the website and sign up for a free instructor account
  3. Read through the lesson plan.
  4. Print and make copies of any handouts.

Teacher Tips

  • Allow students several minutes of free exploration before beginning structured tasks.
  • Encourage students to make predictions before changing variables.
  • Ask students to explain observations using evidence from the simulation.
  • Connect diffusion to healthcare, respiration, and nutrition whenever possible.
  • Use a graphic organizer to help students record findings.
