Shodor: Introduction to Functions

Details

Activity Description

Shodor Functions
Source: Function Machine (License: Protected by Copyright (c) [i.e. screenshot])

Students explore the concept of functions using function machines, data tables, and algebraic rules. They learn how inputs and outputs are related, identify patterns, and represent functions using words, tables, and algebraic expressions. Through collaborative activities and technology-based exploration, students develop foundational algebra skills needed for higher-level mathematics.

Preparation

  1. Check the website to ensure it is not blocked at your site.
  2. Read through the lesson plan.
  3. Print and make copies of any handouts.

Teacher Tips

  • Begin with simple one-step functions.
  • Encourage students to explain their reasoning.
  • Use color-coding to distinguish inputs and outputs.
  • Reinforce that every input has only one output.
  • Connect functions to workplace and financial literacy examples whenever possible.

More Ways

Name That Function Game

Students compete to identify function rules after viewing only a few input-output pairs.

Career Connection

Explore how functions are used in:

  • Business
  • Healthcare
  • Construction
  • Technology

Extension

Introduce nonlinear functions such as:

y = x²

and compare them to linear functions.
