Community Involvement / Volunteering: Infographic

Write the word "Community" inside a large circle on the whiteboard or on a document projected on a screen. Ask the class: "What makes a community strong?" and "What are some problems communities face?" Record students' answers.

Ask if anyone has every volunteered (or if they know someone who has), and if so, to give details. Introduce the concept of service learning and say that there are many benefits to voluteering for communities and organizations, as well as for volunteers.

Introduce the terms "nonprofit organizations" and "non-governmental organizations" (NGOs). Ask students if they can name any they know of. Tell students that these and other types of groups are sources of volunteer opportunities. Give examples for any students haven't already named, including

1. Community theaters, museums, and monuments.
2. Libraries or senior centers.
3. Service organizations such as Lions Clubs or Rotary Clubs.
4. Local animal shelters, rescue organizations, or wildlife centers.
5. Youth organizations, sports teams, and after-school programs.
6. Historical restorations, national parks, and conservation organizations.
7. Places of worship such as churches, mosques, temples, or synagogues.
8. Schools.

Show some pictures from local news (or a video) about a community issue.

Say to students: What are the growing problems in our local area, and how can we give our time or skills—rather than money—to help fix them? Let's come up with a list.

Group students into teams of three or four. Have them brainstorm specific issues relevant to their local neighborhoods (e.g., safety issues, social isolation among senior citizens, littered public parks, or English language barriers for new arrivals). Groups can record their brainstorm list on a shared Google Doc. Have each team share their ideas orally with the class.

Project your screen so the entire class can see a volunteer matching platform (such as Idealist or other local databases). Show them how to filter searches.

Model Example: Type in the local zip code, select a category like "Environment" or "Hunger," and look for keywords like No Experience Needed, Flexible Hours, or Group Volunteering.

Analyzing the Results: Read a few local volunteer descriptions together. Point out the action verbs (e.g., organize, donate time, collect, sort) and emphasize how these opportunities focus on hands-on effort rather than financial contributions. Going back to students' lists, see what volunteer opportunities match with one or more from each group's list of community needs.

Select one identified community need and model how to find data/statistics about it online (e.g., the percentage or number of unhoused people in the local community, literacy rates, crime statistics, etc.).

In their small groups, students select one specific community issue they feel passionate about.
They use search engines and targeted volunteer websites to research local organizations addressing this issue.
Students identify three concrete, realistic ways individuals can get involved and take notes on the organization, the location, how to apply, the hours, the duties, and so on.

Groups then search online for data / statistics to share.

Once groups have found (a) volunteer opportunty/opportunities and have taken notes on the details, introduce students to a digital design tool such as Canva, Venngage, or Piktochart. Demo how to use the site chosen for the assignment. Show an example infographic, such as this one:

Students use the platform's layout tools or templates to create an infographic. The graphic must include:

1. A title stating the community issue.
2. A simple statistic or statement about why it matters.
3. One or two ways people can volunteer to help.

Gallery walk or presentations:

Each group projects their digital infographic or presents it from their workspace. Each team member must speak for at least 30–60 seconds, explaining:

1. Why they chose this specific local issue.
2. The volunteer opportunties they found.

To apply classroom learning to a concrete, real-world service learning initiative., hold a class voge.After all presentations are complete, the class holds a democratic vote to select one cause or volunteer project to adopt as a collective group.

4.Execute the Service Project Action day.

Conduct the service learning activity as a class. Students document the experience by taking photographs or notes for a post-event reflection in which students report what they learned or gained from the experience.
