Lesson Plan
What are your thoughts on AI like ChatGPT and Siri? What are the pros and cons? Students share the pros and cons of AI from their warm-up.
Introduce how ChatGPT can help students understand long, complex texts. Some pros to possibly include can be:
- It summarizes the content, making it easier to understand
- Visually breaks it down
Some cons to possibly include can be:
- How do we know if ChatGPT has a bias toward this proposition? As readers, we have to determine if the information sounds neutral or if it sounds bias.
Then, introduce Ballotpedia.com as a resource for people to be informed of measures, propositions, and elections. Emphasize that students would still need to summarize the information so that they understand it in their own way.
Give students a tour of Ballotpedia and where to search for current ballots in the search bar. Then, show the “Full text” section where the ballot has complex information.
For this activity, California proposition 32 (2024) is used as an example. In ChatGPT, prompt the software to “help me understand this”. Then, copy and paste the full text from the previous step into ChatGPT.
Model how to summarize the information in your own words. Example information to summarize: "The law gradually increases the minimum wage in California to ensure workers can afford basic living expenses."
For this activity, teachers can decide how they want students to present the information. Students can take notes and talk about the proposition, or use Google Slides to show off the information.
Students will choose a proposition, then scroll down to the “Full text” of that proposition. The parameters for the assignment can be:
1. Copy and paste the full text into ChatGPT and ask it to simplify the text for better understanding.
2. Only prompt ChatGPT once (so that students can still have a challenge to…)
3. Summarize the information in your own words.
Students will present the information they found about their proposition.
Find another proposition to enter into ChatGPT.
