A quick and easy recipe for salsa.

Preparation

  1. Check the website to ensure it is not blocked at your site.
  2. Read through the lesson plan.
  3. Print and make copies of  recipe. (in documents)
  4. Napkins,plates, utensils, bowls (depending on recipe)
  5. Food -see recipe
  6. Tablets, cell phones maybe used to look up ingredients in salsa, if needed. 

How-To

This activity is done in a group. All materials are organized for learners to use.

Depending upon the size of the group, organize learners in groups of 4 if possible. They can have a "Co-chef" help them out if needed.

-First step,

All learners must have clean hands. They can have an option of wearing gloves or not. Gloves are preferred.

-The recipe cards will be passed out. (See documents)

-Instructor will identify all ingredients and demonstrate the recipe.

-Learners will identify/read ingredients.

-Learners may discuss alternative ingredients.

-Learners can work in groups of 3-4, participating in active listening,turn taking and communicating with each other.

-Each group will have 1 large bowl for salsa. All in group will take turns, stirring, cutting and adding in spices.

 

Practice
Engagement

Once demonstrated, learners will proceed with the recipe all together.

Ingredients will be handed out accordingly, in order from the recipe.

For safety reasons, utensils are plastic, no sharp objects are used. The cutting ability can be challenging, but can be done with a plastic knife.

At time a learner may need assistance with using utensils, spreading, holding bowls or pouring.

Once all ingredients salsa is placed in a big group bowl, learners can pass 1-2 spoonfuls on their plate.

Learners will clean up after themselves. Clean table, throw trash.

***Ususally due to time, paper products are used.

-Can you use technology to help you cook

-Learners may ask to make more recipes.

-Some may come back and say they made it at home. 

-Have a student google a recipe online.

-Instructor may want to check out the Food Network to see some of the cooking channels.
