Activity Description

AI

Students will learn to use ChatGPT to generate math questions tailored to their specific career, helping them connect math skills with real-world applications.

Preparation

  1. Familiarize Yourself with ChatGPT
    • Practice Using ChatGPT: Before the lesson, explore ChatGPT yourself to understand how to phrase prompts effectively. Generate a few example math questions related to different careers. This will help you anticipate how to guide students in crafting their prompts.
    • Sample Prompts: Prepare a list of sample prompts related to your specific CTE Program (e.g., finance, healthcare, engineering) that you can show students.
  2. Prepare Career-Related Math Questions
    • Generate Questions in Advance: Use ChatGPT to create 10 example questions based on different career fields to show students how diverse careers can involve math. Save these examples to display during the lesson.
    • Examples to Generate:
      1. A question on calculating interest for finance
      2. A dosage calculation for healthcare
      3. A load-bearing calculation for engineering
      4. A budgeting question for retail or business
  3. Set Up Technology
    • Classroom Tech Setup:
      1. Device Access: Ensure you have a device with internet access to project ChatGPT (or access to ChatGPT if students will be using it on their own devices).
      2. Classroom Display: Set up a projector or screen so that you can demonstrate using ChatGPT in real-time to generate questions.
      3. Student Devices: If students will be using their own devices, check that they have access to ChatGPT (either with individual accounts or a shared classroom account if available).
  4. Plan for Student Guidance
    • Prepare a List of Example Career Fields: Consider a diverse list of career fields that students may be interested in (e.g., law enforcement, veterinary medicine, sports management) and how math applies to each. This can help students who may not immediately know how math relates to their career interests.
    • Prompt Examples: Prepare prompts with different levels of specificity. For example:
      1. Broad: “Give me a math question related to healthcare.”
      2. Specific: “Generate a math question involving dosage calculation for a nurse.”

Teacher Tips

One of the strengths of AI prompt generation is that if you don't get the exact answer you want, you can continue asking.

For example, in the resource, using ChatGPT, the prompts included:

Prompt 1:

Pharmacy technicians must know how to calculate day supply, provide 10 questions for pharmacy technician students to practice day supply calculations.

Prompt 2:

Provide questions in multiple choice questions.

Prompt 3:

Provide answer sheet with explanation with how to solve each problem.

Foster AI and Digital Literacy

  • Explain the Power of AI as a Tool: Emphasize that AI is a resource, and learning to use it wisely is an important skill. Highlight the benefits of AI for personalized learning and problem-solving.
  • Discuss Responsible Use: Mention that while AI can provide useful questions, it’s still up to students to understand and solve the problems. Encourage students to double-check generated questions for clarity and appropriateness.

More Ways

Demonstrate to students how to ask AI to be a personal tutor by asking AI to show a different method in solving the problem.
