Computer and projector, newspaper ad for the grocery section

Activity Description

A interactive activity using a grocery ad for meal planning.

Preparation

  1. Check the website to ensure it is not blocked at your site.
  2. Read through the lesson plan.
  3. Print and make copies of any handouts.

How-To

You may ask your students:

How many help with grocery shopping?

Do you make a list?

How many use coupons?

Do you look for sales?

Do you help find the items in the store?

Teacher Tips

I like to have newspaper ads for at least 5 groups. I will give each group a topic to look for.

Example : find me breakfast items.

A group that understands money: What can I buy for a dinner for 2 people, $25.00.

At the end of the activity, each group can share their topic.

More Ways

If you are using a projector, this works well. You have the ad available for all to see. You can go through activity together and then have students break into groups.

Program Areas

Lesson Plan

Warm-up
Engagement

How many help with grocery shopping?

-Make a list

-Read the ads for groceries

-Clip coupons/digitally

-Get items in the store

-Put groceries away

Introduction
Engagement

I will ask you some questions regarding the ad you see:

-Someone wants me to bring dessert, what can I bring?

-I was asked to bring beverages, what does that mean? What can I bring?

Today we will work on memory skills, reading the newspaper ads, turn taking and just trying to have fun while we learn!

When in zoom, I will enlarge to 200% for a clearer picture of the ad. This works well for my students.
I also can use the ad on a projector in a classroom. Later I will break the students into groups for smaller and greater understanding of the tasks.

Practice
Engagement Enhancement Extension

Instructor will ask questions to students, either to raise their hands, nod their heads, raise their eyebrows, all a form of communication.

Example- What can I bring according to the ad for a beverage?

                -Name a dairy product.

This type of questioning enables all students to actively participate.

As a form of Enhancement:

The structure of content will come at the end, a summary. Instructor may give clues for reminders of what was just learned. Students are working on critical thinking, memory, langugae, turn taking and also active listening.

Example:

If I were to bring beverages, am I bringing burritos?

According to the ad, am I bringing milk? What am I bringing?

Where else can you find grocery ads?

Can you buy groceries at other stores?

As always instructor will create a safe environment for all students to learn from all answers.

Evaluation
Engagement Enhancement Extension

Assess learners' performance of the skill by comprehension of questions. Students may use oral, aural ,written or assistive devices for responses.Instructor will evaluate the eye contact to the presentation ans who actually is looking at the screen/newspaper. Eye contact also relates to head being in an pward postition, not looking downward. Eye contact is a soft skill we are always working on in communication skills.
