In this activity, students create a meme to demonstrate their learning of a class/lesson concept, a reading passage, a term/vocabulary word, or grammar structure.

Preparation

  1. Check the website to ensure it is not blocked at your site.
  2. Read through the lesson plan.
  3. Print and make copies of any handouts.
  4. Practice using the site to make your own meme and use as an example so that students.

How-To

To use the ImgFlip meme generator, follow the following steps:

  1. Open a web browser and navigate to https://imgflip.com/memegenerator. A random image is displayed.
  2. Select "Upload new template" to upload an image or to paste in the URL for an online image. Explain to students that if they select the box "Allow this template to be shared publicly," then the image they upload will be available in the gallery of the site for anyone to use, and they will most likely not want to do this with personal photos. Alternatively, enter a keyword in the "Search all memes" box to use images from the site. Scroll to see options.
  3. The image can be rotated by using the curved arrow above the meme preview area. The spacing button will add a text box area, which, when selected, can be placed at top, bottom, or both, and can be recolored and resized.
  4. Select "Add Image" above the preview box to add another image and/or add stickers in the site gallery.
  5. To the right, enter top and/or bottom text and select text color and text outline color. Select the gear icon to choose font and text formatting (all caps, bold, italic, font size, text alignment, etc.).
  6. Select effect to choose image adjustments (blur, grayscale, brightness, etc.).
  7. When the meme is complete, select "Generate Meme." There are social media sharing and email sharing options as well as a URL to the meme and an embed (html) code.

You can also use the site to assign students to create and send you a meme to indicate how they feel about a particular class concept, as an exit ticket, or as a check-in.

Engagement

Ask students to define "meme" and explain anything they know about memes, Ask if they have a favorite meme, and if so, to describe it or find it online. Show popular, current, and/or your favorite memes. Explain them or ask students to share their explanations or interpretations.

Introduction

Use the Wikipedia entry on "internet meme" or other source to give students information about the history and development of memes.

Tell students that they are going to create a meme to demonstrate their understanding of something taught in class.

Presentation

This part of the lesson will have been covered previously. Your lesson could have been on topics or activities including the following:

  • understanding vocabulary from context and generating sentences using the new vocabulary by relating it to students' live
  • comprending the main idea(s) of a text
  • generating sentences using newly-learned and practiced grammar structures
  • any other course concept
    Students will demonstrate their understanding by using the meme generator for displaying/presenting their writing.

Practice
Enhancement

Students craft the phrases or sentences their memes will include create a mock-up or just consider what image their meme will include. The teacher provides feedback on the writing and meme concept.

Evaluation
Enhancement

The memes can be printed and posted in a physical classroom or can be added to a website or shared Google Slideshow. Students present their memes to classmates. Provide students feedback based on a checklist or peer comments.

Extension

Students will have an understanding of the use of memes in society as well as for the purpose of mnemonic devices for retaining course content. They will be able to make their own memes in the future.
