Nutrition for New Readers

Details

Activity Description

This set of 6 lessons is designed to teach intermediate level literacy students nutrition awareness while teaching basic computer and Internet use and improving reading comprehension. The primary goal is to improve reading comprehension. Computer use and the Web sites related to nutrition are vehicles for increasing literacy.

Preparation

  1. Make sure that the Web site links still work and are not blocked at your school before having students use the Web sites.
  2. Go through an activity on your own to anticipate student difficulties before you have students do the activities.

How-To

Use the booklet over the span of your course, perhaps one chapter a week. Students can also be assigned to use it independently outside of class time, if they have computer/Internet access. Answer keys are included for the exercises. The chapters are the following:

  • Before You Begin: How to Use a Computer
  • Chapter 1: Food Guide Pyramid
  • Chapter 2: Making Healthful Choices
  • Chapter 3: Tips for Healthful Eating
  • Chapter 4: Fats, Cholesterol, and Your Health
  • Chapter 5: Recipes for Health
  • Chapter 6: Finding County Nutrition Programs

Teacher Tips

  • Before students use the computer to do the Internet search activities, go over vocabulary to provide students with listening and speaking practice.
  • Demonstrate for students how to do the first Internet activities if they are unfamiliar with the Internet and are beginning computer users.
  • The booklet includes answer keys in the appendix for the exercises.
  • Important note: You may choose to omit Chapter 1. The USDA has discontinued the Food Pyramid dietary / nutrition standards. See instead the Choose My Plate site, which has information you can use with your students. Also, you will want to substitute Chapter 6 with your local area county services programs

More Ways

You can also choose to have students complete just one exercise or one chapter, depending on your teaching/learning objectives and course content.
