National Women's History Project: Women Who Worked for Peace Quiz

Details

Activity Description

Students learn about a woman influential in history or the women's rights movement, read and take notes, and write a report and/or make a presentation. This project can be used during the month of March, which is Women's History Month.

Preparation

  1. Make sure that the site is not blocked at your school before assigning the project.
  2. Choose questions from the quiz questions to assign and copy and paste on a document, print out, and cut into sentence strips for distribution.
  3. Prepare a handout with general biographical questions: When was she born? Where was she born? What education did she receive? What were her main accomplishments? Why is this woman important in history? What did you learn?

How-To

  1. From the Quizzes page of the Web site, choose a quiz question and assign it to a student, pair of students, or small group.
  2. Students use the Internet (Google and then the site’s Biography Center and/or a site such as Wikipedia) to search for the answer to the question (answers are provided on the site at the end of the quiz questions).
  3. Have students answer biographical questions about the woman and answer how/why she is important in history or in the women’s rights movement, and make a report/presentation to the class.

Teacher Tips

  • Demonstrate for students how to type the question into an Internet search engine, such as Google, and locate the answer.
  • Show students how to use the National Women's History Biography Center or another Web site, such as Wikipedia, to find biographical information and take notes.
  • Create a sample report/presentation so that students understand expectations of the assignment.
