U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services: Study for the Test

Activity Description

Use the Web site's resources in a Citizenship class or as part preparation for/teaching of the EL Civics Government and History Unit.

Preparation

1. The Web Site shown above is the Learners section of the site. To find Lesson Plans and Activities to help you teach the material at the site, select the Teachers navigation button and choose Lesson Plans and Activities .
2. Make sure the site is not blocked at your school. If it is, many of the resources can be downloaded in advance.
3. Preview the Lesson Plans, materials, and videos to determine which level is appropriate for your class.
4. Gather any necessary relia, or print materials that need to be downloaded and photocopied (see the lesson plan).
5. Cue up any videos you want to use and make sure they play before having students view them. (You can find these under the Teachers section, Educational Products category.
6. Then using the videos, provide students with questions to answer to help focus their listening/viewing.
7. If students are working individually, prepare instructions explaining which videos to watch and which other materials to review and practice with.

How-To

1. Using your lesson plan as a guide, introduce new vocabulary.
2. Ditribute handouts and show appropriate videos per the lesson plan.
3. Go to the Learners home page and show the students how to access the materials on their own.
4. Select Study Materials for the English Test. Resources on this page include two videos (Becoming a U.S. Citizen and The USCIS Naturalization Interview and Test); flashcards on reading and writing vocabulary; a vocabulary list for the reading test; and three practice tests (Understanding Commands for the Naturalization Interview with flashcards and practice exercise and two self-tests on vocabulary for the naturalization interview). There is also a study booklet titled Learn About the United States - Quick Civics Lessons.
5. Back on the Learners home page, select Study Materials for the Civics Test. Resources on this page include two videos (The USCIS Naturalization Interview and Test and A Promise of Freedom with a discussion booklet); three sets of civics flashcards (one in Spanish); a study booklet; the 100 civics questions with answers; two MP3 audio files of the 100 Civics questions and answers (one in English and one in Spanish); and a Naturalization Self Test.

Teacher Tips

The materials provided on the site can be the basis of a Citizenship course curriculum. Students can be directed to go online to do the self-tests and/or to watch videos.
