PIMPAMPUM Flickr Toys: Bookr Online Flipbook

Details

Activity Description

Use the Bookr http://www.pimpampum.net/bookr tool of the site to make an online illustrated book using Flickr images.

Preparation

To use your own class photos, create an account at Flickr and upload them. Remember your user name for searching for and using the images in your Bookr book. Practice using the site yourself before having students use it.

How-To

If you want to use your own photos, create an account at Flickr (www.flickr.com) and upload your photos. Open the PIMPAMPUM Web site in your browser. Click "Bookr." Type in a user or tag to find Flikr images to use in the book. Click on an image to have it appear on a page. Type in the title and author on the front page. Flip the page in the bottom right corner. Click on other Flikr images from the sliding gallery at the bottom of the screen for following pages. Type in captions, as desired. After inserting images, the top toolbar on the book allows you to adjust the position of the book by clicking the right or left arrows. You can delete the image by clicking "Delete Image." Click the small + plus sign on the right of the book to add pages. When the book is complete, click "Publish This!" Wait for the saving process to be complete. To share the book, in the "Send To" box, type in email addresses and click "Go." Click "Blog This" to get an embed code that you can copy and paste on a Web page in the html editing mode or get a direct link to the book. Click "Recycle" to edit the book.

Teacher Tips

Using the site may be challenging for beginning computer users. It is a good idea to provide printed directions, model how to use the site, and put students on teams with at least one team member who has computer skills and comfort in using computers. Your work is published online, but can be revised by choosing the “recycle” option. The URL for your project can be emailed to others. There are numerous projects that you could assign to your students using these tools.

More Ways

The Web site offers a variety of tools that use Flickr images -- photos you or your students have uploaded or those of any other Flickr users who have made their photos public. These are other ideas for using Bookr and the other tools on the site: Project ideas for bookr: •Explain how to do a particular process. •Explain symbols. •Give advice to young people. •Illustrate descriptive and narrative writing. •Make a book using any class writing that can be illustrated. •Make a family or class photo album. •Make a hometown, city, or school tour. •Make an end-of-class tribute. •Write a book report. •Write a book report. •Write about daily activities. •Write about family member(s) or a family story. •Write an alternate story ending. •Write a biography or autobiography. •Write a thank-you letter.
