Project: I Want to Be an American Citizen

Details

Activity Description

This is an example of a project created by 4th - 6th grade bilingual students on the topic of citizenship. It is written in both English and Spanish, so it could be useful for teaching citizenship as well as being an example of project-based learning. For students who want to study individually, questions and answers related to the interview for United States citizenship are provided.

Preparation

  1. Make sure that the site is not blocked at your school.
  2. Decide on a way to provide the link to the site to your students. Suggested methods would be to provide a Word document in an electronic format so students can just select the link to launch the browser and go to the site, or add this list to your class or school Web page as a resource for Citizenship students.

How-To

  1. Refer students to the Web site shown above. From the home page, they need to select "Citizen Project"[www].
  2. To see the questions of the online study guide, select "Citizenship." Questions and answers provided in English and Spanish are presented in groups of 19 - 20 per page.
  3. Students can be provided a handout with the questions and be assigned to write the answers or can copy everything for writing practice.
  4. Additionally, the sentences can be used for dictations.
  5. On the Citizenship Test page, students can select "Espanol" to view the directions for the site in Spanish.

Teacher Tips

Some of the links for Web sites in the "Immigration Sites" page are commercial or no longer exist, so you may want to harvest only active sites from the list for further student study.
